            <title>The technology minefield!</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p>No matter how much you may dislike IT and want to stay away from IT you simply cannot avoid IT no matter how hard you try. We are surrounded by IT and dependant upon IT in all areas of our day to day lives whether we are conscious of IT or not. IT is without doubt the biggest change in human history since the industrial revolution and IT is developing at a ferocious rate. IT is of course IT (Information Technology) and it is just as important in the leisure industry as any other industry, worldwide.  </p>

<p>Whilst we require systems and Information Technology to help run our organizations, we must also research what is really required in order to operate at an optimum level. With the constant barrage of new and innovative technologies it is essential that procurement research is an ongoing process in order to evaluate what is and is not required to achieve the best result possible for a variety of situations.. As we all know technology evolves at an incredible rate and whilst certain aspects can be a huge help, others can be a costly hindrance as they quickly become redundant. </p>

<p>Within the leisure industry one of the first technologies and actually one of the first things an organization should research is a <span class="caps">CRM </span>or leisure management solution to help run the facility. This is the main system that an organization will use and depend upon on a day to day basis and yet for many this will be the last on their list of priorities after the gym equipment, supplement supplier and wall colour! In contrast many councils and some of the major private organizations spend a great deal of time and money to go through an arduous tender and demonstration process in order to acquire the right system for them. Such a procurement process will include many evaluation criteria from functionality to value where value is not always seen as the cheapest solution but the one that fulfils a greater number of the operation's requirements in the most efficient and effective manner and thereby significantly cutting ongoing costs such as staff time. Indeed the very nature of a leisure management system is to simplify the way a business operates by automating many usually manual procedures and thereby reducing staff requirement, reducing the time required to perform such usual manual procedures and in turn provide more time for the more important activities such as greater customer interaction. As with all technologies there are of course a number of management systems to choose from and when taking into consideration its central role within an organisation it is of great importance to select the one most suitable. Part of that consideration should reflect the ever changing trends of the leisure industry and technology and to therefore purchase from a creditable supplier who can provide a system with longevity and the ability and funding to reinvest into future development to match such industry and technology changes. </p>

<p>Another consideration with regards to the leisure management system should be its ability to link to and work with other technologies an organization is likely to need and utilize. For example one of the latest industry trends is of that to provide a 24hour unmanned facility. The leisure management system should therefore allow for online capabilities such as memberships to be purchased and renewed and a link to the club's security system so that member details do not have to be entered twice into two different systems. </p>

<p>In order to gain access through such security systems a membership card or key tag is required and the most common used format of these are barcoded. This is an example of where technology has changed but not necessarily for the better. Magnetic strip cards can easily scratch or be wiped of the information they hold. The latest buzz within the industry has been the <span class="caps">RFID </span>or Radio Frequency Identification cards. Most <span class="caps">RFID </span>cards or tags contain an integrated circuit for storing and processing information and the second is an antenna for receiving and transmitting the signal. They enable the user not to have to physically come into contact with the reader and hence why some call them proximity cards as they only have to be near the reader to register. Some leisure management system suppliers recommend the <span class="caps">RFID </span>solution in order so that members can use them for cashless payments, however more advanced systems provide for such functionality actually within the system itself and therefore rid the need for the expensive <span class="caps">RFID </span>solution. One of the main reasons for their late bloom within the leisure industry, having been patented in the early 1980s, is due to their expense and ineffective way to provide functionality that a reliable high function system and far cheaper barcode cards can already provide. More recently <span class="caps">RFID </span>cards have also been 'hacked' so that sensitive information can be captured by criminals and so this is another downside of using a solution that does not store the cashless account information within the software itself but instead on the media. </p>

<p>After a membership and access system have been chosen there are of course many other technologies that a club can look at implementing in order to help with the running of their facility. Another relatively new technology is that of personal training software systems which can be used to set training programs and monitor progress. The Technogym Wellness system can be used by the trainer to set a number of different programs to include a cardio and weights workout. The member can then pick the workout they wish to do and see videos of what each exercise is and how it should be done. After completing the first exercise the system will then tell them which exercise and equipment is next and each exercise is monitored by the system to show how well they performed. The trainer can then check their attendance and performance and adjust their program if need be. The benefit to the club is that not as many trainers are needed to look after as many members and also that personal trainer utilization and member attendance and therefore retention increases. The Wellness system can only be used in conjunction with the Technogym equipment whereas the Fitlinxx system which provides similar functionality can be used with any equipment and be added on to equipment that a club already has in place.   </p>

<p>Another technology that is taken for granted on an everyday basis and now impossible to be without is the internet! It's now the most common way to book methods of travel and holidays, buying dvd's, music and many other products, finding information on any and every topic, joining organizations and of course networking with others through the loved or loathed Facebook and Twitter! Nevertheless it is still not being used to its full potential within the leisure industry. Many clubs do have their own websites but these sites do not provide any form of real interaction for their members such as allowing them to make and pay for bookings or change their contact details or purchase or renew memberships and check what bookings they have. This is due to the lack of integration between the website and the club's leisure management system. However the more advanced leisure management systems do allow for such functionality and can empower the club's website to be far more than just a tool for providing information. Virgin Active are an example of an organization who have fully embraced the power of such an interactive website and who have consequently reaped the rewards of an increased membership base and retention levels. </p>

<p>Overall there are many technologies to consider and then many choices within a specific technology to choose from. Such diversity and the speed with which technology changes demands that a great deal of research be done in order to decipher as to whether it is necessary and what value and return on investment it will provide. It is tempting to rush into getting the latest gadget or fad to set yourself apart from the competition or to buy the cheapest available but wise buyers will wait for a technology to prove its worth and show its longevity and its undoubted drop in price. Look to purchase tried and tested products from reputable suppliers and look at what leading organizations within the industry are already using and ask them as to why. Finally it is also important to remember that the technology is only as good as the user and that it is there to help and make operations easier not to actually run the club or leisure facility. Love it or loathe it technology is a must have and is here to stay.</p>]]></description>

<h4><b>Integrated New Chip &amp; <span class="caps">PIN </span>payment solution</b></h4>

<p>Gladstone is delighted to be able to offer its clients - through a joint development with the market leading Chip and <span class="caps">PIN </span>technology supplier Commidea - a fast, secure, and user-friendly payment solution which has been fully integrated and accredited with Gladstone Plus2™ <span class="caps">V9.3.</span></p>

<p>It really couldn't be easier - instead of a customer being asked to use their signature to verify payments, they can simply insert their debit or credit card and enter their four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) known only to themselves; just like they would a cash machine or indeed in a restaurant.</p>


<h4><b>Reservation Management</b></h4>

<p>One of the key management developments with the Gladstone Plus2™ <span class="caps">V9.3 </span>upgrade is the ability for your course administrator to simply create a new course register from the previous term or session and pre-register the enrolled students. This will save staff considerable time in transferring large numbers of students on swimming classes or gymnastics courses for example. It's a simple "copy and paste" function - and will take a lot of the "enrollment day" pain away from course administrators.</p>

<p>With the recent launch of Gladstone self-service Connect2 and Kiosk2 solutions, these advanced tools when integrated with Plus2 <span class="caps">V9.3, </span>will allow the course records fees to be presented to the students or parents to pay when due at their convenience on-line.</p>


<h4><b>Direct Debit overnight reporting</b></h4>

<p>Relieve the headache of running long Direct Debit reports by running the required reports overnight without any staff interaction; and with little or no impact on the daytime business operations. The reports will be ready for managers to review in their Plus2 report archive when they arrive into their centre the next morning.</p>

            <description><![CDATA[<h2>Training information</h2>

<p>Courses are available for operators, managers &amp; IT engineers and they comprise of a series of half day training sessions. The number of sessions required is dependent upon the management system and users to be trained; therefore sessions are tailor-made to the client's requirements.</p>

<p>All courses incorporate hands-on exercises to ensure the training information has been fully absorbed, and a copy of the training manual is presented at the end of each session for ongoing reference.</p>

<p>Gladstone training professionals will:</p>


<ul>
<li>configure specially designed courses around clients' requirements</li>
<li>offer staggered or phased training sessions for clients with extended implementation periods</li>
<li>offer refresher training to provide clients with an opportunity to reacquaint themselves with the skills they may have forgotten</li>
<li>be present on-site when the installation is complete and the system goes 'live' for the first time. Any operational queries can be resolved and clients can ensure they are using the system in the correct manner. Live day cover provides clients with invaluable expert assistance</li>

<p>The training hotline is a new service provided for customers who are in the configuration stage of project implementation. The service is designed to offer advice and support on configuration or functionality issues and all queries for the training hotline are answered by qualified Gladstone trainers.</p>

<p>The Gladstone Service desk operates during the following standard hours of business and gives you direct access to a team of product and technical analysts dedicated to resolving your problems and helping you make the most of your software.<br />
